Five creators. Five neighborhoods.

A local micro-creator in Wicker Park talks to a different room than one in Hyde Park. We match creators to the ZIPs your customers actually live in, not to the biggest follower count on the list.

  • 60 to 80 percent in-metro audience match
  • Nano and micro tiers (1k to 100k)
  • Food, fashion, fitness, family, culture

The Playbook04 / 12

What works vs what doesn't.

For local businesses, brands, and restaurants. The pattern is unusually consistent across categories.

What works

  • Nano (1 to 10k) and micro (10 to 100k) local or community creators. 3 to 6x the engagement of mega, at far lower cost.
  • Audience geo-match (60 to 80% in your metro) matters more than follower count for foot traffic.
  • UGC plus whitelisting or boosting (Spark Ads, Partnership Ads). Roughly 4x the conversion of polished brand content.
  • TikTok for restaurant discovery ("best [food] near me"). Reels for the reservation decision.
  • Repeat and ambassador deals over one-off posts. Gifting or comped meals. Unique promo codes.

What doesn't

  • One-off macro or celebrity posts for a single location. Audience is nationally dispersed.
  • Follower count and vanity metrics as the selection signal. Bought followers.
  • Shared discount codes. They destroy attribution. No tracking at all.
  • Skipping FTC disclosure. Penalties reach $53,088 per violation. Liability falls on the advertiser.
  • Over-scripted content. Wrong platform for the goal.

Vetting · Checklist08 / 12

How to vet a creator, the CMO checklist.

01

Engagement

Pull the MEDIAN engagement rate (not average) of the last 10 to 20 posts. Use ER-by-reach or views for video. Flag anything below the tier red-flag line. Inspect comment quality: bots leave generic or emoji-only comments.

02

Geography

Critical for local. Require an audience evidence pack: top cities, age, gender, reach. For a single location, demand 60 to 80% audience concentration in your metro. Validate with comment language and tagged locations.

03

Authenticity & fraud

Run 1 to 2 fake-follower tools (HypeAuditor, Modash). They are 85 to 92% accurate. Check for unnatural follower spikes.

04

Brand safety

Review 10 to 15 past posts for tone and quality. Review past brand deals and disclosure history. Confirm they actually use or visit the product.

05

Compliance

Require FTC-compliant disclosure (#ad, Paid Partnership). Never condition pay on positive sentiment. Put deliverables, usage rights, and disclosure in writing.

06

Attribution

Set this up before launch. Unique promo code AND tracked link per creator. Discount 10 to 25%. Add a 'how did you hear about us' capture. Reconcile code, link, and POS.

07

Red flags

Engagement below the tier floor. Sudden follower spikes. Generic comments. Stated geo that doesn't match content or language. Won't share analytics. Prior undisclosed paid posts.

ROI · Local vs National09 / 12

How to deploy for reach.

Local: geo-matched nano and micro plus promo codes plus POS or reservation tracking. National: multi-market micro rosters or macro reach plus whitelisting amplification and sequenced platform rollout.

$5.78

Median earned-media value per $1. Restaurant food-creator programs report up to ~8x.

60 to 80%

Target audience-in-metro concentration for a single-location campaign.

Nano · Micro

Best cost-per-engagement. Build multi-market micro rosters for hyper-local scale.

Macro · Mega

Reserve for national launches and cultural moments, not single-location foot traffic.

Unique codes

The #1 predictor of measurable ROI. Never share a single code across creators.

Repeat > one-off

Ambassador cadence compounds. Always-on beats campaign bursts.
